June 2022
Voyage, Voyage
For people fortunate enough to be able to travel overseas, summer 2022 marks an opportunity to finally escape from their pandemic penitentiaries. But times have changed. In this month’s newsletter we share news of a major update to AirBnB’s offering, how TikTok is being used for destination marketing, and where you can get a horse to write your office emails!
MUST-READS
Virtual tourism
In a world where, unfortunately, many prospective tourists are unable to visit their dream destinations because of cost, travel restrictions or ongoing pandemic problems, virtual tourism might be the solution. Whether a metaverse pure-play or a VR experience, virtual tourism might not match really being there, but as you can see from this 3D virtual visit to the sets where Star Wars was filmed in Tunisia, sometimes it can get you places you’d never actually go.
Hybrid nomads
AirBnB CEO Brian Chesky recently announced changes to the online lodging marketplace’s product offering. Not only has the website been redesigned, the way that visitors explore listings has also been rethought, with search by category rather than destination. Free proprietary travel insurance called AirCover and the option to book split stays are also aimed at digital nomads, including some of the staff at Camden’s offices, who have made the most of our hybrid work model to work from places as far away as Mexico and Greece!
Giddy-up and go!
Iceland prides itself on doing things differently. The tiny North Atlantic island country was hit as hard as anywhere by the Covid tourism crash, but now it’s launched a marketing campaign that is sure to convince even the biggest neighsayers (sorry, had to go there). A punny website called OutHorse Your Email invites prospective visitors to “Disconnect from work and let the horses of Iceland reply to your emails while you are on vacation.” As long as you don’t mind some poop on the keyboard, it’s fun!

Not Lost
Not Lost is a new travel podcast co-produced by Malcolm Gladwell’s audio company Pushkin. Each week, two American journalists visit a city where they ask locals to show them the sights, sounds and tastes, while doing their best to get invited to a stranger’s house for dinner. The very first episode, Voyage Voyage, features Camden’s original home town of Montreal. Who knows, maybe the hosts will end up visiting our other offices in Toronto, Lyon and Hong Kong before the series is over!
